The Current Reality

  • Out of School Children:  At least 13 million children (pre-primary, primary, and junior secondary) are out of school. Nearly half are girls.

  • At-Risk of Drop Out: An estimated 3.5 million additional children (primary and secondary) are at risk of dropping out of school. Nearly half are girls.

  • Teachers: The pupil-teacher ratio is an estimated 39:1 at the primary level. Female teachers account for only 39 percent of primary school teachers.

Our initiatives

  • Reading Clubs: Creating ‘Reading Clubs’ in schools and assisting teachers in enhancing literacy at their schools has been one of the strategies to help children develop a lifelong love for learning.

  • School Gardening: Our ‘School Gardening’ project helps students learn about the impact of climate change on food production, explore sustainable solutions, and gain access to fresh, healthy food to promote healthy eating habits. and enhance food security.

  • Education in Emergencies: Ethiopia has struggling communities due to several factors, including refugee crises, internal conflicts, and natural calamities. We support children facing challenging situations, aiming to give every Ethiopian child access to an excellent education.

  • Digital Literacy. Making digital literacy a part of our teacher training, Teach For Ethiopia Fellows have been working on educating students on digital literacy, STEM education being one of the prime focus areas of Teach For Ethiopia.
